Statement of Teaching Interes and Philosophy - Luis Longhi
Few years had passed since the first invitation to lecture internationally,
At that moment, I experienced the need to understand and /or to find out “that” rational process to produce architecture.
After several intents to find some logic to my process as a professor and as an architect, the conclusion was to title “Living by Instinct” to that first lecture.
Facts as not being able to read in my childhood have had pushed me to compensate that disability with the development of other skills.
Sensibility, instinct and intuition dominated my process both in my architecture as well as in my teaching.
Teaching architecture as I see it is an act of “transmitting” not that of showing how to do things. Students go to the university with the aim of becoming architects; of finding out if they have got what it takes. What is the first thing we should teach them?
First of all, we must explain that the person standing in front of them is only someone with more experience in the field, someone that will appreciate questions for which he or she have or not have an answer, someone who will transmit his/her inner self with not limitations.
In my case I have learned few statements that help me transmit:
First, the understanding that nature is divine creation therefore it is perfect.
The direct consequence to this statement is that any kind of intervention in nature becomes an attempt to transform perfection.
Second, the understanding that the tool that mankind has to transform nature is “design”.
Etymologically design is defined as the corollary of two words: divine and sign, therefore one could define design as “the act of making divine decisions”.
Third, the understanding that nature and design have been together since mankind creation, therefore the world was, is and will be designer’s responsibility.
Fourth, the understanding that architects great responsibility is that of transforming nature, this means transforming perfection with and to perfection. In other words,
the understanding of architecture as the nature of nature.
These four statements have become the fundaments to consider each time I have to either propose new architecture or understand existing architecture.
It is fundamental to listen to the environment and to establish a relationship with it, this relationship will be similar to any other type of relationships that humans have, and it can be direct, sophisticated, romantic, respectful, sane or insane.
In my case it is very direct, meaning intuitive and sensitive with not major analysis and/or rationality. Therefore when I teach, I tend to transmit and establish a relationship with the students similar to the relationship I have already established with the environment, then it is easy to appreciate communication between professors students and the surroundings.

Transmitiendo Arquitectura - Luis Longhi
El mejor mensaje que como arquitecto puedo dar a los estudiantes de arquitectura es compartir con ellos lo que soy, tratando de transmitir lo que siento por la arquitectura.
Soy más intuitivo que racional, he llegado a la conclusión que escucho más lo que me dice el corazón de lo que me dice el cerebro. Soy consciente que mis muchas limitaciones intelectuales me ayudaron a desarrollar un instinto y sensibilidad hacia el entorno tan especiales que me permiten establecer relaciones íntimas con todo lo que me toca intervenir. Creo que soy una persona simple que le encuentra sentido a la posibilidad de comunicarse con la tierra, las piedras y cualquier otro ente inanimado que tenga una historia que contar. En mi arquitectura trato de que estos objetos, supuestamente inanimados, se encuentren con el hombre, supuestamente animado, y juntos traten de tener un solo espíritu…
El único hilo conductor que tengo (¿con qué?) es la pasión por encontrarle sentido a lo que hago. Hace cinco años quede fascinado con la definición etimológica de “diseño”, supuestamente viene de dos palabras divino y señal, que derivaría a una definición de diseño como el acto de tomar decisiones divinas, la trascendencia de esta definición ha sido tal en mi practica que ahora le encuentro sentido a todo lo que hago.
Me inspira el entendimiento de que el arquitecto tiene la obligación de transformar lo perfecto (el entorno sin modificar) con perfección. No funciona de otra manera esto hace que constantemente me refugie en la soledad para encontrarme conmigo mismo y poder tomar decisiones divinas.
Creo que el estado perfecto del ser humano se encuentra cuando uno finalmente establece una relación intima con la soledad.
Considero unos conceptos que tienen alguna implicancia en mí:
El territorio, para los peruanos “la pacha”, es un cuerpo perfecto, creación divina que solo se le puede intervenir cuando este (la pacha) nos da su aprobación; de otra manera, la intervención seria una violación.
Para que la pacha a intervenir nos acepte la tenemos que conocer bien, establecer una relación con ella, hacer que nos quiera, nosotros también quererla y solo después de haber conseguido ese nivel de relación la intervención y la pacha serán una sola, así el territorio intervenido seguirá siendo cuerpo perfecto creación divina.
Desde mi punto de vista las culturas ancestrales tenían fundamentos naturales, no basaban su desarrollo en la tecnología como nosotros tristemente lo hemos venido haciendo. Prefiero al dios sol o a la diosa luna de los incas que al dios dinero de nuestros tiempos. El afán del progreso nos está llevando a nuestro propio fin, tenemos que volver atrás y tratar de re direccionar el progreso tomando decisiones sabias.

La materialidad de las intervenciones arquitectónicas en entornos naturales es la poesía con la que el arquitecto debe conquistar a la naturaleza para hacerla suya.
Consigo la relación interior-exterior en una obra de arquitectura esculpiendo el entorno, preparándolo para aceptar la intervención, así cuando se da la “unión” esta funciona perfectamente haciendo que el encuentro entre el entorno y la arquitectura sea uno en el que no se registre donde termina lo natural y donde empieza lo artificial.
Siento a la luz natural como el acompañante perfecto en el recorrido de una obra de arquitectura, su compañía es tan potente que mientras uno más se aleja del sol siente que hasta puede llegar a enterrarse en luz.
Cuando hablamos de lo existente pienso que es una perfección modificada no siempre con perfección; entonces se convierte en algo más difícil de intervenir. Hay que intentar establecer una relación con ese entorno modificado siendo esta relación difícil de lograr ya que dicho contexto esta de alguna manera “traumatizado” entonces viene el tema de la arquitectura como terapia social, un tema mandatorio en países con historia de colonización como el Perú.
Esto es ver la arquitectura como una vida... como un ser, como “LA ARQUITECTURA”.
