THE TITICACA LAKE CONTEXT

 

 

Weaving Architecture at Taquile Island

The best way for natives, at Taquile Island in Lake Titicaca, to express themselves is by weaving,  in fact they learn to weeve before reading or writing. Traditionally, the way to report their year round activities is by using different types of symbols on thier weaved waistbands, an important piece of their attire. This community had maintained their ancestral traditions for centuries, becoming one of the few communities in the planet where one can find and learn essential ways of living. I feel fortunate to collaborate with them in the Master Planning of their Island.  They expect vanguard architecture coming to their place; I feel vanguard architecture should appreciate the basics of life.

 

Tejiendo Arquitectura en la Isla de Taquile

Los Nativos de la Isla de Taquile se expresan de mejor manera a través de sus tejidos, es más, aprenden a tejer antes de leer o escribir. Tradicionalmente ellos reportaban sus actividades anuales tejiendo diferentes símbolos en una faja, pieza importante de su vestimenta, mejor conocida como faja calendario.​ Esta comunidad ha logrado mantener sus tradiciones ancestrales por siglos, convirtiéndose en una de las pocas comunidades del planeta donde uno puede encontrar y aprender sobre formas esenciales de vivir.​ Me siento muy afortunado de tener la oportunidad de colaborar con ellos en el Plan Maestro de la Isla.

Ellos esperan la llegada de arquitectura de vanguardia; Yo creo que la arquitectura de vanguardia debería apreciar más lo esencial de la vida
